NLM is expected to complete their reload in mid-December. We will keep you informed on the progress of the  2010 edition of MEDLINE.

If you currently have an AutoAlert saved on OvidSP for MEDLINE, watch for your next AutoAlert after the reload is complete.

With this recent update from the University, the Medical Library must reduce its collections budget by an additional 5% during the current fiscal year (FY 2010).  You will recall that the Medical Library reduced the collections budget by 10% for FY 2010 in July. This additional 5% reduction will result in further journal and database cancellations and decreases in book and other print materials purchases. We will continue to handle these cancellations and purchases judiciously, considering the following:

  • preservation of access to highly used unique resources
  • minimization of impact on research and teaching
  • collaboration and cost-sharing with campus partners and consortia
  • consideration of campus priorities
  • elimination of duplication of print and electronic formats.

Faculty input continues to be critical to this process. As the Medical Library considers changes, we will inform you about specific cost-cutting strategies likely to affect your respective areas. Librarians will work with departments to ensure that information needs are met, making purchases where necessary and drawing upon many other resources and services, including document delivery and interlibrary loan. We will continue working, individually and through consortial agreements, to negotiate lower annual increases for online databases and journals purchased in bundled packages.

Ms. Giddens is a second year Masters of Science student in a joint program with the University College of London and the Yale School of Medicine.  She spent her first year in London.

    Open Access Publication does not eliminate publication costs.  (See the Library’s decision to drop Open Access membership with BioMed Central, and BioMed Central’s response.)

Authors’ Rights:

  • Authors should know their rights, no matter where they publish, in order to retain appropriate control of their work.

    SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition, has developed an Author Addendum that modifies the publication agreements most publishers require authors to sign.

Hemberger served as the Medical School’s medical illustrator, creating thousands of anatomical and pathological drawings in support of research publications and teaching.

In his off hours, Hemberger was a talented artist, working from his studio at his home in Hamden, experimenting with a variety of media and forms of art.  He arranged an annual art shows at the Hospital, exhibited in New York, Baltimore, and all around New Haven, and taught students in his home.

Hemberger’s granddaughter, Susan Dowling Slover and her husband Robert Slover, own many of Hemberger’s original paintings ranging from landscapes to collages to futuristic abstracts. They also have etchings and engravings, colorful Christmas cards, and book plates that Hemberger created for physicians and others.  All but the medical illustrations in Case 2 have been lent for this exhibit of Hemberger’s art by the Slovers.

There will be a reception on November 3, beginning at 4:30, during which additional larger paintings and engravings will be on display in the hallway of the Library.
